About Katti Batti

After delivering one of the biggest hit Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Queen Kangana has come up with her next flick. Imran Khan, who is still struggling for success even after spending 7 years in Bollywood, is back on screen after 2 years (as his last release was in 2013). Katti Batti is directed by Nikhil Advani which is his consecutive release after Hero. Kangana and Imran have shared the screen for the very first time and that too in a romantic comedy. Let’s find out if they have been able to rock the show or not?

Plot

‘Love, live-in relationship, break-up and heart break’, these words forms the crux of the plot of Katti Batti. The movie is a modern day love story wherein young architect Madhav Kabra aka Maddy (Imran Khan) and a carefree girl Payal (Kangana Ranaut) fall for each other, get into a live-in relationship and stay together for 5 years. But, due to sudden turn of events Payal leaves Maddy, which leaves him shattered. How Maddy deals with his heartache and will he able to get Payal back in his life is what Katti Batti is all about.

Performances

These days, when we know there is Kangana Ranaut in a movie, we surely expect a lot! After giving a power pack performance in Tanu Weds Manu Returns and winning the national award for Queen, this is not what is expected from Kangana. There are no flaws in her acting; no doubt she is one of the finest actresses of Bollywood! What is disappointing is the fact that why did she even sign for a movie like Katti Batti? Although, she is the heroine of the movie but is not much seen on screen. You will see Imran in almost all scenes in the movie. Imran has performed fairly well but he looked no different like his other movies – Break ke Baad and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein.  He has looked intense in some scenes but it seems his struggling days are not over yet! Not with Katti Batti at least! Even, pairing with Kangana would not be able to save his grace and get him a hit in Bollywood. The biggest disappointment has come from director Nikhil Advani. How could he deliver two loose plots consecutively? – Last week Hero and now Katti Batti. The script, the dialogues, the plot, the characters are so loosely written and presented that they all together make Hero look much better than Katti Batti. With a top actress and a struggling actor, Nikhil looked confused as what to deliver on screen? Cinematography by Tushar Kapoor is the only solace for the audience.

Katti Batti Music

There is not much to talk about the music. There are six songs in the album all composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. ‘Sarfira’ by Siddarth Mahadevan and Neeti Mohan, and ‘Lip to Lip’ by Nikhil D’Souza and Ritu Pathak are bit peppy and are on the charts. ‘Ove Jaaniye’ by Sayani Palit and Mohan Kannan is in two modes – normal and reprise. Overall the music is not remarkable.

Details of songs in the movie:

All the songs of the movie are composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy 1. “Sarfira” Singers: Siddharth Mahadevan, Neeti Mohan, Qaran Mehta Duration: 04:04 2. “Lip To Lip” Singer: Bhavin Shastri Duration: 04:09 3.“Sau Aasoon" Singer: Shankar Mahadevan, Rasika Shekhar Duration: 05:41 4.“Ove Janiya” Singer: Mohan Kannan Duration: 06:06 5.“Jaago Mohan Pyaare” Singer: Siddharth Basrur, Rasika Shekhar Digvijay Singh Pariyar and Raman Mahadevan Duration: 04:32 6. “Ove Jaaniye” (Reprise) Singer: Sayani Palit Duration: 04:48

What’s Good?

Both Kangana and Imran have done fairly well. Although both have shared screen for the first time together, but the chemistry between the two is one of the only good things about the movie. The musical Sufi group whom Maddy meets in Delhi, FOSLA (Frustrated One Sided Lovers Association) does bring little humour to the movie with their songs. For instance one of their songs that make one laugh is: ‘Pyar karne waale, jala de lungi. Love ki baj gayi pungi.’

What’s Bad?

Almost everything! Loose plot, shattered script, choppy direction- everything makes you yawn. Moreover, there is no newness in the structure, characterisation or story of the movie. It is basically a mixed bowl of salad whose ingredients have been taken from other Bollywood flicks. Verdict:  Some parts of the movie are watchable, otherwise it is passable. Watch it if you are a Kangana fan or if you want to see a mockery on love and relationships!
