With growing consciousness, there is a shift from watching a film because of the star cast to recognizing the worth of a good story. And this shift has made way for a lot of good story-tellers to come forward and narrate good stories through their short films without having to spend crores in them.

Short films are also an excellent platform for budding filmmakers to nurture their skills before jumping into the big league.

Let’s look at some of the short films which have excellent performances, are concise and a must-watch:

1. Aunty Ji (2011)

Aunty Ji

With Shabana Azmi and Anmol Rodriguez in the lead, this is a beautiful short film about acceptance which we often dissent from on the grounds of ageism and lookism. Azmi plays a Parsi widow, full of life but is old and isolated. One day she finds a companion in an anxious girl, who is also an acid-attack survivor. In this Adeeb Rais’s 20 minutes short film, he shows us two castaways – who are shunned by the society based on looks and age.

2. Ahalya (2015)

Ahalya
Ahalya – The story is based on the mythical story of Ramayan.

Ghosh’s short film starring Radhika Apte, Tota Roy Chowdhury, and the veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee is one of the most intelligent pieces of film making. The story is based on the mythical story of Ramayan. In the epic, Ahalya plays the wife of Gautama, who is a sage and much older to her. The twist comes when Lord Indra gets attracted to her beauty and disguises himself as her husband and pursues her. And hence, Ahalya is cursed by the sage for her infidelity. Ghosh has interpreted the story by giving it a feminist twist and stoned the male character instead.

3. The School Bag (2016)

The School Bag
The School Bag shows mother-son relationship through the routine of everyday life.

On the terrorist attack at Army Public School in Peshawar, Pakistan in 2014, The School Bag  shows mother-son relationship through the routine of everyday life before the incident. Starring Rasika Duggal as the mother and Sartaaj RK as a son, the story captures you with all its little emotions but incredibly momentous.

4. Chutney (2016)

Chutney
Chutney is a spine-chilling short film starring Tisca Chopra, Rasika Duggal, Adil Hussain.

It is a spine-chilling short film starring Tisca Chopra, Rasika Duggal and Adil Hussain. The film is shot in a close encircled place which makes the watch uncanny. But what happens inside this confined house is unanticipated. The storytelling is subtle, but the way it unfolds makes the story what it is.

5. Khujli (2017)

Khujli
Starring Jacky Shroff and Neena Gupta, this is a joy ride.

Indian parents – as uncomfortable as it sounds, Sonam Nair attempted rather a successful one to humanize it amongst us. Starring Jacky Shroff and Neena Gupta, the middle-aged parents try to imitate the tricks of 50 Shades of Grey. And the way they work and implement those makes it amusing and a treat to watch.

Other films which deserve a watch are Nayantara’s Necklace, Juice, Methi Ke Laddoo, to name a few. Let us know what your favourite is.
