Delhi’s Rajouri Garden assembly constituency is a crucial seat for all the 3 major political parties (AAP, BJP, and INC) in Delhi. It is an upscale area whose sitting MLA is from Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) Manjinder Singh Sirsa. This time SAD didn’t file a candidate from the constituency by saying that they are not contesting the Delhi Assembly election. However, later they announced support for the BJP candidates.

The major candidates of the Rajouri Garden assembly constituency in the 2020 Vidhan Sabha Election are Dhanwati Chandela of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Ramesh Khanna of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Amandeep Singh Sudan of Indian National Congress (INC).

Rajouri Garden was a Congress stronghold from 1993 to 2008 assembly elections. Former Union minister Ajay Maken was the MLA from this constituency during 1993, 1998, and 2003 Assembly elections. While INC’s Ramesh Lamba won the 2004 bypoll election, Dayanand Chandila of Congress won the seat in the 2008 election. However, Shiromani Akali Dal’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa won the seat in 2013 and 2017 bypoll. In 2015, Rajouri Garden assembly seat was won by AAP’s Jarnail Singh. It needs to be seen whether AAP can win the constituency in 2020.

Main Issues/Factors in 2020 Delhi Assembly Election’s Rajouri Garden Constituency

Rajouri Garden assembly constituency’s main issues/factors in 2020 Vidhan Sabha election are:

  • Initially, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had announced pulling out of the BJP-alliance. This gave the AAP candidate a better chance of winning. However, after the BJP-SAD alliance has been restored recently, the poll dynamics change drastically as SAD has significant influence over the Sikh community. This may lead to BJP candidate’s win in the 2020 Delhi assembly election.

  • The local business community (mainly made up of marble and mechanical related small scale industries as well as commercial centers) is worried about the sealing drive, creeping among them. This fear has been creeping among them since 2018 when the Supreme Court had set up a monitoring panel to clear up the ‘mess’. The SC had also asked the South Delhi Municipal Corporation to issue a notice to the local industries and business establishments regarding this. Sealing is going to be an important issue during this assembly election.

  • As Rajouri Garden assembly seat consists of a large number of Sikh migrants (who came from Pakistan during partition) the Narendra Modi government’s move towards implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has been praised by the Sikh community. Though it is a poll issue in this region, it is still not sure how much will it affect the psyche of the voters in this assembly vote.

  • The main issues in Rajouri Garden still hover around the day-to-day issues including better roads, electricity, and power.
