This marks the first election since the reunification took place. Three municipal corporations, namely North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation, with 64 wards, were merged in March as the central government sanctioned the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill. The trifurcation happened on January 13, 2012.

The amendments to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957 led to fewer seats (wards), 272 to 250. The final report of the delimitation exercise received approval, and the centre published it on October 17. It will have 13,665 polling stations and 1.46 crore voters as per electoral rolls on January 1, 2022, stated Vijay Dev, State Election Commissioner. As per norms, 42 seats of the 250 wards have been reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) candidates—comprising 21 for SC women—while 104 seats each have been reserved for general category and women candidates.

“In the last 15 years, the BJP has spread garbage all over Delhi, creating huge mountains of garbage. This time, on December 4, the people of Delhi will vote for the cleanliness of Delhi. They will vote to make Delhi clean and beautiful. This time Delhiites will choose AAP in MCD,” The Hindu quoted Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal as saying. The congress leaders call it a “golden chance” for the party to return to power in the Delhi municipality, whereas the BJP aspires to retain their position in the fourth term.

BJP won 70 seats in SDMC, 64 in NDMC and 47 in EDMC, amounting to 181 out of 272 seats, followed by 49 seats to AAP and 31 to congress. Out of 250 seats of the MCD, 126 seats are needed for a majority. Will the election be fought on rising pollution levels, the state of schools and sanitation rather than other petty issues?
