The Election Commission of India released the 60-member Meghalaya assembly election schedule on February 15, 2023. As per the schedule, the polling will be held in a single phase on February 2, 2023, and the results will be declared on March 2, 2023. Its tenure will end on March 15, 2023. The last assembly elections were held in February 2018, following which a coalition led by the National People’s Party (NPP) formed the state government, with Conrad Kongkal Sangma appointed the Chief Minister. The NPP is the only party from the Northeast region to have recognition as a national party.

About Meghalaya Legislative Assembly
The unicameral state legislature of the Indian state of Meghalaya is known as the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. It is located in Shillong, the state’s capital, and has 60 members who Meghalayans choose. The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s members are chosen directly for terms of five years. The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is responsible for making laws and regulations for Meghalaya. It can propose and pass bills, approve the state budget, and monitor how the state government operates. The Assembly also has the authority to use various tools, including a question period, a motion bringing attention to something, and a motion of no confidence, to hold the state government responsible for its deeds.
Details of Nominated Candidates
In the upcoming 2023 state elections, the BJP and the Congress Party have nominated candidates for all 60 Assembly seats, while the NPP, TMC, and UDP compete for 57, 56, and 46 seats, respectively. The HDPSP and the PDF have also put forward candidates for 11 and 9 seats, respectively. The Meghalaya CM and the National People’s Party (NPP) president, Conrad Sangma, announced his candidacy from the South Tura constituency in the West Garo Hills district. The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and the state unit vice president, Bernard N Marak, will contest from the same constituency.
Metbah Lyngdoh, the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has announced that he will be for re-election from the Mairang constituency in the Eastern West Khasi Hills district. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who was previously elected as a Congress candidate in the 2018 election, is currently campaigning as a Trinamool Congress candidate from two seats: Songsak in the East Garo Hills and Tikrikilla in the West Garo Hills.
Additionally, Vincent H. Pala, a Congress MP and state party leader is running from the East Jaintia Hills district’s Sutnga Saipung constituency. Furthermore, the leaders of regional parties, including Banteidor Lyngdoh from the People’s Democratic Front (PDP) and Martle Mukhim from the Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), will be running for the Mawkynrew constituency.
