What is the difference between a hurricane, typhoon and cyclone?

These terms describe essentially the same type of tropical cyclone, but the name depends on where the storm occurs. “Hurricane” is commonly used in the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific, “typhoon” in the western North Pacific, and “cyclone” in the Indian Ocean and parts of the South Pacific.
