Which African country was historically known as Abyssinia?

Ethiopia, located in the Horn of Africa, was historically known as Abyssinia. The name was commonly used to refer to the Ethiopian Empire and its surrounding highland regions. The term Abyssinia is believed to have originated from the ancient Habesha people, who inhabited the region. Ethiopia has one of the oldest recorded histories in Africa, with its roots linked to the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, which flourished as an important centre of trade and culture between Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The country is also known for its distinctive cultural heritage, ancient churches and historical monuments. Unlike much of Africa, Ethiopia largely maintained its independence during the European colonial period, apart from the Italian occupation between 1936 and 1941. The country officially adopted the name Ethiopia in place of Abyssinia in modern international usage.
