Why do some deserts become extremely cold at night?
Some deserts become extremely cold at night because they have very dry air, little cloud cover, and sparse vegetation. During the day, the desert surface absorbs a large amount of solar energy and temperatures can rise rapidly. After sunset, however, the heat stored near the surface escapes quickly into the atmosphere through radiative cooling. Because there is little moisture in the air to retain heat, temperatures can fall sharply within a few hours.
Clear skies also allow heat to escape more efficiently compared with humid or cloudy regions. As a result, some deserts can experience a very large difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures, with extremely hot afternoons followed by chilly or even freezing nights. This is particularly common in high-altitude and inland deserts, where the dry atmosphere and elevation can intensify nighttime cooling.
