About the Amar Mahal Palace Museum

Once a king’s residence, this palace has now been converted into a museum. Four rooms in this palace are now made into historical museums and art galleries. They contain paintings, artefacts, and other necessary articles related to Jammu’s history. 

The main attraction of this museum is the golden throne of Jammu. It is said to be made of 120 Kg of pure gold. Other features of this museum include the paintings of M.F Hussain and Laxman Pai, along with other contemporary painters of India. Another striking feature of the Amar Mahal Palace Museum is the Pahari paintings that narrate tales of Mahabharata and popular folklores. 

Besides, it also comprises a library with 25000 historical books and a vast collection of art. Heritage walks are also organized here to give the visitors a detailed tour of this palace cum museum.

History of Amar Mahal Plalace

Amar Mahal Palace was built in the 19th century as a residence of the Dogra king, Raja Amar Singh. Lush green patches and meadowlands surround it. It was the last residence of Dogra Kings. After that, it became a residence for Maharani Tara Devi. She was Raja Hari Singh’s wife. 

After the queen died in 1967, her son and his wife converted the palace into a museum in 1975. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi inaugurated it. All this was done to preserve the Jammu district’s rich past.

Structure of Amar Mahal Plalace

The Palace cm museum is built in a well-planned French-Chateau architecture style. The whole structure is made using red sandstone. It adds to the beauty of the palace’s surroundings and makes it a perfect destination for photography lovers and people visiting here.
