About Jorasanko Thakur Bari

Nilmoni Tagore built this house in 1784 when he left his paternal house due to a dispute in the family. Later, Rabindranath Tagore’s grandfather, Dwarkanath Tagore, expanded this house. In 1861, Rabindranath Tagore was born here. 

In 1959, the state government planned to set up a university to memorialise Rabindranath Tagore at the Jorasanko Thakur Bari. Finally, Rabindra Bharti University was founded in 1961 on Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary. In the same year, the Rabindra Bharti Museum was also established at this place which is locally called Jorasanko Thakur Bari.

Timings of Jorosanko Thakur Bari

The Jorosanko Thakur Bari is open daily from 10.30 AM to 5.00 PM. It remains closed on Mondays and all public holidays.

The entry fee for the Jorosanko Thakur Bari is as follows:

For Indians

  • Entry to the bari is free for physically challenged people, street children, and students of Nursey to the 5th standard. 
  • Other Students are charged ₹10/- per head
  • Adults are charged ₹20/- per head

For SAARC Countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka)

  • Students are charged ₹20/- per head
  • Adults are charged ₹30/- per head

For Other Countries

  • Students are charged ₹100/- per head
  • Adults are charged ₹150/- per head

Other Charges of Jorosanko Thakur Bari

  • Photography Charges

Photographs can only be clicked outside the museum. It is strictly prohibited inside the museum. The charges for photography are ₹50/- per device.

  • Tour Guide Charges

There is no fee charged for the guide inside the museum. This service is strictly dependent on the availability of guides.

  •  Light and Sound Show Charges

The ticket price o the light and sound show is ₹50/- per head. Children above three years are required to buy the ticket—the bookings for the show open at 5.30 PM at Rabindra Sarani Gate.
