2020 Hyundai Verna

Against all odds, the Hyundai Verna has continued to be among India’s top-selling entry-level sedans. The last design upgrade that the Verna underwent a couple of years ago, was quite well accepted by customers and increased sales figures by quite a margin. The new upgrade is along with Hyundai’s fresh design philosophy called “sensuous sportiness” and has already made its way into the Chinese market.

The 2020 Verna will be dimensionally smaller than the current model which sported a coupe-styled roofline that gave it an extra edge over the rest of its competition. The front of the current model has a cascading grille with sleek headlamps and border defining daytime-running lights. The fog lamps on this model were very sharp and crisp looking as compared to the older generation SX. The current model also received way more bling than its previous versions – something particularly targeted at the chrome-loving Indian market. From the emblem to the fog lamp trims, the door handles to the boot-lip garnish at the rear end, chrome has defined and outlined every pronounced aspect of Verna’s styling. Besides, it came with sixteen-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and arrowhead LED tail lamps that appeared to be flowing towards the boot. It even got a shark fin antenna in the top variant and came with eight monotone colour options.

The 2020 Verna sports a slightly exaggerated facia, both on the front and rear, with unconventional design motifs and pronounced features.

The front gets a much larger grille than the current model, with a dynamic-looking bumper and sleek, elongated LED headlamps which seem to be merging with the grille. If you look at it from the front, a little bit of the Elantra comes to light. However, the overall styling is very unique and makes its statement. The tail lamps are also extended to the centre of the boot, where they meet at the Hyundai emblem in the centre of the trunk lid. An all-new diffuser adorns the rear end and has elegantly placed chrome lining which merges with faux exhaust tips on either side of the lower half. The diffuser also gets a petit reflector at its centre which makes it stand out even more. Alloy wheels get a dual-tone theme and sporty would be to feeble a word to use for their description. However, we like the current-gen alloys a bit more. If you’d like to put it in one word, the 2020 Verna is much more accentuated in terms of styling features than its previous model and it all somehow makes the car exuberate a future-ready vibe.

The current-gen Verna offers two diesel and petrol motors each, both in 1.4 litre and 1.6-litre configurations which pack a decent amount of punch for a small sedan.

The 2020 Verna is expected to share its powertrain with the Kia Seltos SUV and will get BSVI compliant 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines. Kia’s 1.4-litre turbo petrol could also find its way into a slightly less powerful, more economical variant of the new Verna.

The 2020 Verna will be making its debut at the upcoming Auto Expo in February next year and its launch will follow shortly after. Though it competes with the likes of the Maruti Ciaz, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid and the Honda City, the only worthy challengers it faces are the last two cars.

2020 Hyundai Elite i20

Expected to be revealed at the biennial Auto show, is the 2020 Hyundai i20 Elite. The Korean automaker is lining up several models for the upcoming Expo, in light of the positive response secured by its latest compact SUV – the Venue. Among the upgraded line-up will be a facelifted version of their micro sedan, the Xcent, which will sport several interior and exterior changes in response to the market demand for fresh restyling every few years.

The 2020 Hyundai i20 Elite has been spied testing on a few occasions and will be on the company stall this expo.

The overall styling of the car has matured and should play a key role in customer retention while attracting new buyers to choose the car over its competitors. The front end gets projector LED headlamps and daytime running lights. The grille takes inspiration from the current-gen Verna, with a similar cascading appearance. The peppy hatch gets a freshly designed set of machined alloy wheels and completely redesigned all-LED tail lights. The car also gets ORVMs with sharper and angular styling along with LED strip turn-signal indicator lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

The inside gets a complete 2020 inclined makeover, with a centrally placed large touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Apple car play and Android Auto connectivity. Other features include a fully-digital instrument cluster, wireless charging and steering mounted controls. The cabin is distinctly larger because of increased proportions and gets premium upholstery and trim fittings.

Power will come from new BSVI compliant petrol and diesel motors including the 1.0-litre turbo GDI petrol from the Venue.

The i20 Elite challenges the likes of the Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz and the upcoming Tata Altroz.
