Female actor got recognition in Bollywood not through a film full of antics and masala, but through a film that has a significant part for her and fits right into the storyline regardless its screen time. Taapsee Pannu is one of the finest actors of the generation has managed to portray characters which are unconventional and has an identity of their own.
Pannu, who started off her career in South Indian film industry, has done films which are antithetical to the ones she has been doing in Bollywood. Though the actor reflected on her choice of films saying “…I did not have a sense of cinema”. She has done films like Jhummandi Naadam (2010) which is a Telugu film and Aadukalam (2011), a Tamil film, which has indeed gained her quite a popularity and box office numbers.
However, what made her substantial in Bollywood are films which are contrastive in nature. A 10 minutes cameo in Baby (2015) has made not only the audience but also the critics to discern. In thee movie she plays the role of a special agent who is not only a spy but knows martial arts as well. Despite a superstar like Akshay Kumar in a leading role, Pannu managed to outshine.
Another much celebrated film Pink (2016) by Taapsee Pannu, talked about allegory of character assassination of women in sexual assault cases. Where three young secular women are living in Delhi and trying to spend a normal life. Then, their idea of normalcy turns upside down due to a scrimmage between them and affluent local Delhi boys which later turns into a sexual assault case. The film is a courtroom drama which gives it a burl to demolish the idea of women being wrong for getting assaulted due to the length of their skirts and glasses in their hand.
Further, in 2018 Taapsee Pannu was part of another significant film by Anubhav Sinha, Mulk, which deals with a Muslim family residing in Hindu dominated neighbourhood. Murad Ali Mohammad played by Rishi Kapoor and his family’s life overturns when a young member of their family becomes a terrorist because of sedition. Aarti, a Hindu daughter-in-law portrayed by Taapsee Pannu, plays an important character in the film defending the family.
Besides, Pannu has done several other films like Manmarziyaan (2018), Badla (2019), Mission Mangal (2019) to name a few. Her upcoming film in 2019 is Saand Ki Aankh, a biograpy by Tushar Hiranandani where she will be playing an 82-year-old Prakashi Tomar aka Revolver Dadi.
