Who Is Deepinder Goyal?

While Zomato is already synonymous with online food delivery in India, Goyal's path to this point is a tale worth savouring.

Deepinder Goyal, the dynamic co-founder and CEO of Zomato, is not your everyday tech giant. His journey, much like the flavors on his platform, blends intelligence, ambition, and a touch of luck. Despite the ongoing national debate over whether the company is pronounced “Zomaato” or “Zomaito,” the charismatic and astute Deepinder continues to work wonders with his food delivery app. While Zomato is already synonymous with online food delivery in India, Goyal’s path to this point is a tale worth savouring.

Early Life and Education

Goyal was born in 1983 in Punjab, India, into a family that valued hard work and education. He sharpened his analytical skills at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, where he graduated in 2005 with a degree in Mathematics and Computing.

Career and Founding of Zomato

Deepinder joined Bain and Company as a Senior Associate Consultant in January 2006 after graduating from IIT Delhi. During his time at Bain, the seed for Zomato was sown. Long lunch queues and a lack of easily accessible restaurant information intensified his frustration. The realization inspired him to co-found FoodieBay.com, a website that compiles menus and user reviews, in 2008. They were forced to add more establishments to the list due to their experiment and the response they received. FoodieBay.com was launched in megacities such as Kolkata and Mumbai by the end of the year. Their firm began serving consumers in Pune and Bangalore in 2010. Soon after, Goyal teamed up with his colleague Pankaj Chaddah, and FoodieBay became Zomato in 2011, a moniker inspired by “Zomatologue,” an exciting reference to foodies.

The Rise of Zomato

The early years of Zomato were a rollercoaster ride. Funding needed to be increased, and the new startup faced stiff competition from similar businesses, particularly Swiggy. Also, Deepinder’s family initially hesitated to quit his secure employment at the firm and embark on the startup journey and lifestyle. Deepinder’s wife, Kanchan Joshi, whom he met at IIT, was originally hesitant but fully welcomed his new lifestyle. Goyal’s unwavering determination and talent for creativity kept Zomato afloat. He strategically transitioned from a pure information platform to a meal ordering and delivery service, capitalizing on India’s internet development. Deepinder gradually began to inject newer and more modern ideas into his firm, expanding its reach and developing its ‘Zomato’ application in iOS, Android, and Windows. Zomato rose to the top of the internet food scene thanks to its user-friendly layout, strong marketing, and smart collaborations.

Goyal’s leadership style is distinctive. He is well-known for his transparency, unconventional approach, and ability to inspire his team. He isn’t scared to try new things and often makes daring decisions that push the boundaries. This gamble paid off nicely, as Zomato grew beyond metro areas, boosted a social media revolution, and even entered the worldwide market, reaching countries like South Africa, Canada, UAE, and New Zealand. Due to Goyal’s vision and leadership, Zomato is now a multibillion-dollar company. He has not only transformed the food delivery sector but also empowered many restaurants and delivery partners. His influence goes beyond business, as Zomato promotes sustainability and ethical food practices.
