3. Christian Medical College, Vellore

This private research and the educational institute is in a league of its own. Having many firsts under its name, it draws students from all over the country. It conducted the first reconstructive surgery for leprosy in 1948, carried out the first kidney transplant in India in 1971, opened the first College of Nursing in the year 1946, performed the open heart surgery in India in 1961, done the transplantation of first bone marrow in 1986, and performed the first transplant of successful ABO incompatible kidney in 2009.

6. Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry

This educational institute excels in providing both UG and PG medical training. 9. Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh

This public central university was established in 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Its campus is spread over 467.6 hectares and houses a number of colleges. This university, too, holds national importance. Its medical college goes by the name of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC).

JNMC was established in the year 1962 with the aim to prepare students with rigorous training so that they meet with ease the challenges of the scientific, professional, and clinical world. It has a total of 3 centres and 25 departments. Every year it takes 150 MBBS students. Its faculty is class-apart, consisting of 240 experienced and qualified teachers. It also has the Institute of Ophthalmology, which is one of the oldest one in the country.
