Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment): Meaning, Objective And Strategy

Mission Life aims to transform the battle against climate change so that everyone may contribute to the best of their abilities. Climate change and ecological damage are global processes, which means that actions are taken in one part of the world impact ecosystems and populations in another region.

PM Modi unveiled Mission LiFE in the attendance of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Mission LiFE’ (Lifestyle For Environment) is a significant effort to promote a healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle. Rising temperatures and Climate Change are the most pressing concerns confronting the planet and humanity. Mission LiFE makes the battle against climate change democratic by allowing everyone to contribute in their capacity.

About the Mission

Mission Living is a worldwide programme launched by India to assist the world in its battle against climate change and promote a healthy way of life to meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. India proposed the LiFE concept to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow in 2021.

The concept supports an ecologically conscientious way of living, emphasising “mindful and intentional use” rather than “mindless and wasteful consumption.” On World Environment Day, 2022, India expanded on the LiFE vision by deploying the LiFE Global initiatives, inviting academics, research scholars, and start-ups from around the world to consider specific and research-based methods by which the maximum capabilities of regional cooperation can be channelled to tackle the ecological crisis.

The Mission embodies the philosophy of the P3 approach, i.e., Pro Planet People, since it is founded on the fundamental principles of a ‘lifestyle of the earth, for the earth, and by the earth.’ It promotes the circular economy, arguing that the principle of ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’ may help balance progress, economic expansion, and conservation. Mission Everyone becomes an environmental trustee as a result of LiFE. A trustee is an individual who does not tolerate the waste of resources. A trustee acts as a nurturer rather than an exploiter.

Mission LiFE seeks to change our collective approach to sustainability through a three-pronged strategy.

The first goal is to encourage individuals to take simple yet effective green initiatives in their daily lives (demand); the second is to allow industries and marketplaces to respond quickly to shifting demand (supply); the third is to inspire government and industry strategy to endorse both sustainable production and consumption (policy).

It will transform the present “use-and-dispose” economy ruled by thoughtless and harmful consumerism with a circular economy regulated by conscious and purposeful consumption. Mission LiFE aims to motivate at minimum one billion citizens of India and other world citizens to undertake both personal and collective efforts for environmental protection and preservation from 2022 to 2027.

India’s dedication to the LiFE Mission LiFE

India will implement LiFE’s principles and objectives through a mission-mode, factual, and quantifiable programme, demonstrating India’s commitment to walking the speak on climate change. The country’s yearly per-individual carbon footprint is just approximately 1.5 tonnes, compared to the global average of 4 tonnes per year. India has the world’s fourth most significant renewable energy capacity.

India has advanced toward a more environmentally friendly energy source via the National Hydrogen Mission. This will assist India and many other countries in achieving their goal of having a net zero emissions impact. The International Solar Alliance project by India demonstrates that the country is adopting environmentally friendly policies to boost renewable energy and limit the use of fossil fuels.
