The Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) planned to launch a luxury train excursion to boost tourism in the state. The Indian Railways agreed to collaborate with the RTDC on the project. On January 26, 1982, the Palace on Wheels was unveiled. The train consisted of 14 cars, each adorned in a different style inspired by Rajasthan’s royal palaces. The carriages had all of the conveniences of a five-star hotel, such as air conditioning, private toilets, and satellite television. There was also a dining car, a lounge car, and a bar car on the train.
