Tesla’s India Strategy
Tesla’s interest in India has long been stated by its CEO Elon Musk, a market with huge potential for EVs. However, Tesla's ambitions in India have been held back by high import taxes and policy uncertainties. The company was pushing for lower import taxes to make it easier to sell vehicles in India before establishing a local manufacturing plant. Initially, the central government made little motion to decrease import duties. However, things have now changed, and it looks like Tesla has made the call to establish a local presence. Now that Maharashtra is the front-runner in Tesla’s entry into India, one of India’s most industrialised states.Maharashtra’s Offer to Tesla
Tesla has been wooed by the Maharashtra government, which has offered land for the company’s manufacturing facility and attractive incentives. The state has a strong infrastructure, good connectivity , and a conducive business environment. Maharashtra's EV policy offers incentives to companies that set up manufacturing units, such as subsidies, tax benefits, and infrastructural support. It is speculated that Tesla’s factory could either be located in Pune, Nagpur, or Aurangabad, as these are home to large automotive and manufacturing centres. Pune is also home to several leading automobile manufacturers and, therefore, seemed like a natural fit for a plant announced by Tesla for India.
