Maa-Durga-Songs-From-Bollywood

Durga Puja is almost upon us – it is only a week away. In Bengal, it is celebrated for nine days, starting from Mahalaya, and it is during this duration that people in the state come together for one of the biggest celebrations of life, keeping their woes away for these few days. For them it is the ultimate opportunity to rejoice and feel like queens and kings, taking lungs full of oxygen before they dive back in the troubled waters of life once again for the rest of the year. The best period of this festival normally is between 17th September when Vishvakarma Puja is celebrated in the state and Sasthi, the sixth day of the festival which is when the fun starts in full earnest. Anticipation is in the air and even as you prepare for the festival you feel a sense of excitement unlike anything else.

This is the time when Kolkata becomes kallolini (gorgeous in English) in the truest sense. For the rest of the year she is a demure bride just going about her life. These few days of the year are when she fully comes to life and is all decked up for everyone else to see. In fact, Bengalis everywhere in the world celebrate this festival with great gusto and to the best of their abilities. An integral part of this festival is the devotional songs from Bollywood that has always remained the focal point of popular culture in India.

Hey Naam Re

This song happens to be from the film named Suhag, released in 1979 and starring Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles. The song itself was sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohammad Rafi, two of the legends that adorn the bright firmament of Hindi film music. The song was pretty energetic as well and was a massive hit to say the least. It is a popular song for Garba as well.

Ambe Tu Hai

This one also happens to be one of the most popular Bollywood songs dedicated to Maa Durga. It basically is a melodious aarti of Goddess Ambe and till date a number of singers have lent their voices to this song in their own inimitable styles.

Dharti Gagan Me Hoti Hai

This song comes from Jai Maa Vaishno Devi, a film that can be called a blockbuster in the truest sense of the word. It has been sung by Anuradha Paudwal, known for her devotional numbers, and Suresh Wadkar, easily one of the sweetest voices in modern Indian film music.

Jai Mata Di, Chalo Bulawa Aaya Hain

This song is from a 1983 film named Avtaar. Asha Bhonsle, Narendra Chanchal, and Mahendra Kapoor have sung the song. In fact, this happens to be one of the most famous of its kind – devotional Bollywood songs.

Following are some other similar songs that you could listen to if you like devotional Bollywood music:

  • Maa Sherawaliye
  • Mai To Aarti Utaru Re
  • Ambe Charan Kamal Hain Tere
  • Mere Ankhiyon Ke Samne

I am from Kolkata. Like any other Bengali I love my fish, eggs and bhaat and sweets but I also feel proud to be a part of the biggest melting pot of the world - India. It is true that I need to go a long way before I finally call it a day but I have come some way and am sure will travel further. Cheers :)
