It is the birthright of every Indian cricket fan to hold the selector responsible for any debacle suffered by the national cricket team. It always seems that the selectors are more to blame for the fact that the team played poorly than the players themselves.

The first question in such a scenario is why was a certain player chosen and why was a certain player not chosen. Every Indian cricket fan worth his salt can say that he will pick a better team than what was chosen by the selectors and quite often when you hear them you have to marvel at their judgment.

However, criticizing selectors is not my intention over here. The main thing is that there has to be a proper system put in place that is satisfactory for all involved including the fans. The general strategy in India, and for that matter in most of the second tier teams, is to pick a talented player and blood him straight in the national team.

Well, in my opinion, such a step is always fraught with risk as a poor performance can destroy the lad’s confidence for good. This is where a properly graded structure can come into play.

The step up, or rather the process of preparing the player for international cricket, has to start from the academy level. India already has the National Cricket Academy, located in Bengaluru.

This is where the young guns, who are performing well in domestic cricket have to be taken in and prepared on hard and bouncy wickets, which is where international games are played. Mind you this is applicable for both bowlers and batsmen.

The NCA can be the place where techniques are honed, minds are sharpened and the player becomes ready for the next level. If any cricketer is unable to perform, they need to be sent back to their state teams and encouraged to perform well and try and make a comeback. The remaining players need to be shortlisted for ‘A team’ duties.

In my blog post yesterday, I had argued about the need for arranging regular ‘A team’ trips. India already plays as a regular participant in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, which is an annual fixture. This is a positive step indeed but I would also like the team accompanying the senior team as a shadow squad on their overseas tours especially in countries like South Africa, Australia, England, New Zealand and also the West Indies.

This will help the team get some much needed exposure and feel an integral part of the whole set up. In case India does not have an overseas trip in a year, the team can be sent to any of the above mentioned countries for some matches with their ‘A teams’.

The next step is pretty simple. If a player is unable to perform well in the national team you ask that person to sweat it out for the ‘A team’ and replace him with someone from the ‘A team’. For a player who has already represented the national team, this will be a major challenge and he will be highly motivated to get his spot back and this will only be good news for the concerned team.

If the player is unable to be perform in the ‘A team’ , they should not be chucked out altogether as is the wont of selectors around the world, who are always looking to usher in the new era. The player needs to be sent to the NCA so that he can work on his game and find his way back up again.

The important thing is that the player needs to be kept in the loop so that they do not lose their way and the early promise does not wither away. It is important that they are assured that they are part of the system and every bit as important as the person who took their place.

Quite often with the right support any athlete can exceed expectations and do unbelievable stuff for his or her team. That watering has to go on so that the plant can become a full-fledged tree.

    • I think you will need to enroll at a good cricket coaching center to start with. As you progress I am sure you would be able to figure out things by yourself and with help from your coaches and colleagues. 🙂

      • Sir I stay in kalol near ahmedabad. It is my passion to play cricket. I don’t go to any club. But when I went to cricket selection in mehsana i was selected for their private state level matches. But I left it because it was their private management. Sir I am a good cricketer and want a chance to be selected in any level so that I can grow up with my abilities to the next level myself. But I don’t know where when and how the selection are going to be held in ahmedabad for district level or any other level. Plz help me sir

    • Well Kiran, I think you should start off by applying at a local club and then try and perform well so that you can play for your state team and then, one day, for the national team.

    • You have already taken the first step. 🙂 Relax and be patient. Keep performing well and trust your abilities. One day I am sure the concerned selectors will take note of you and play you in the Bengal team and then the national team. Good luck and have a great career ahead. 🙂

    • I am not really aware of the fee structure of clubs or even coaching centers. Normally, they conduct trials and if you appear at the trials and do well, there is a good chance that they will select you and then pay you to play for them. 🙂

        • Juned, I am sorry but you have to play at a club in order to get selected for your state and then your country provided selectors like your performance. That’s the way things roll here 🙂

    Every1 who sees me during nets/matches, says that i must be a ranji player, bt due to lil politics in cricket i m unable to get the chance for maharashtra, god gifted bowling pace i have got bt it is going to be waste

    • That is really unfortunate. As of now, just focus on performing for Kolhapur and have faith in yourself and your abilities. Just enjoy being able to play cricket. If you think too far and are unable to attain those goals you will only bring pain to yourself. Just keep performing. That is what is in your hands.

      • Rahul, I understand your feelings and I trust what you are saying. However, if you really feel you are good enough may be you can visit the head offices of Maharashtra Cricket Association and talk to them about your grievances directly. May be, they will be able to help you.

        I am just an admirer of the game. I have never really played the game at any serious level like yourself. 🙂

    • I think you should start by enrolling at a good coaching center and learn your basics well. From there on your coaches will be able to tell you which way you should head.

    • The most basic aspect of selection, in my humble opinion, is performance and then comes the necessity of the team in question – whether someone of your skill set is needed in the team or not?

    • Vikas, I would suggest that you contact the various clubs in your locality where players get paid to play matches. Once he starts performing well over there he can think of a longer career in the game. 🙂 Keep your heads up and do not be disheartened. 🙂

    • First of all, let me thank you for your complements. Secondly, this article was about how to select the Indian cricket team. What you have said is undeniable – it is not only cricket but a lot more things that middle class and lower class people are unable to pursue owing to paucity of funds. However, since I am not aware of the facts in the domain of cricket coaching, especially the issue of costs, I feel it will be unwise for me to write anything on that count.

    • Hemant, I would suggest you to go and appear for the trials of the Assam team since Manipur does not presently play in any form of first class cricket in India. I am sure that with your talent you will be able to make a career for yourself in this game. 🙂

    • Navneet, aap ko bhi namaste. 🙂 Actually as per my negligible knowledge it would be better if you start playing for your local club. However, from what I known Uttarakhand does not have a Ranji team. So try moving to a state like Delhi that has an organized club structure. If you perform well you would be selected in Delhi’s Ranji team and from there if you do well you will be able to go on to the IPL and then perhaps the Indian team. Good luck on your cricketing journey.

    • Navin, I think if you have never learnt the game at a coaching center it is better you start doing that. I do not know if there is one in your state. If there is none, then may be Delhi would be a good option for you.

        • Hi Navneet, I really have no idea about this. If I provide you any information then it may be a wrong one. However, I know that Sonnet Cricket Club in Delhi is a very good one. If you know any cricketer from your state you should ask him about this. 🙂

        • It is fantastic to note your speed. I am not exactly aware of the selection process for Indian age group teams. However, you should try and play professionally. If possible try appearing for the trials of your state/district age group teams. If you play well there is a chance with your pace you could be selected for the Indian age group team.

    • Hi Tapish, it is preferable that you start with a local club and then perform well so that you are picked for your state. After that you need to keep on doing well and then you could play for the Indian team.

    • Subhodip you should start by enrolling in a club near you. Look for ones with lesser fees. I am sure that with your talent you might one day be able to play professionally.

    • Yogesh, you would stand a better chance if you have played state level cricket and done well at that. However, you can also see if you can take part in the trials.
