As content-driven cinema is finding its place in the mainstream scenario, 2020 promises a decade of cinematic history with a homogenized genre of mythology, rom-com to sequels and biographies. Cinephiles will have plenty of good cinema coming their way.

Here is a list of some of Bollywood films releasing in 2020 that we are looking forward to:

1. Chhapaak (January 10)

Chhapaak is a biography based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal who survived vitriol attack in 2005. The role will be essayed by Deepika Padukone and directed by an acclaimed director Meghna Gulzar. The first look and the trailer has received a widespread appreciation already. The first big release of 2020, Chhapaak is reckoned with high expectation and a big box office number.

Chhapaak is now streaming on Disney Hotstar.

2. Panga (January 24)

Starring Kangana Ranaut, Richa Chadda, Jassie Gill, Panga is based on the life of Kabaddi player, Jaya Nigam. The movie is also slated to be released at the beginning of the year, and we will see some excellent performers like Neena Gupta, Chadda and Ranaut teaming together.

Panga is now streaming on Disney Hotstar.

3. Jawaani Jaaneman (February 7)

A dramedy starring Tabu and Saif Ali Khan, Jawaani Jaaneman carried through a coming-of-age narrative with Alaya F as the couple’s daughter. The two will be seen together after 24 years in this film – though we don’t know if they are romancing yet. They were last seen together in 1996’s ‘Tu Chor Main Sipahi’. Also, we can’t wait to watch Tabu again after ‘Andhadhun’.

Jawaani Jaaneman is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

4. Love Aaj Kal (February 14)

A sequel to the decade’s best romantic movie by Imtiaz Ali, Love Aaj Kal is coming again with Aaj Kal starring Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aryan. Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan did the prequel.

Love Aaj Kal is now streaming on Netflix.

5. Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan (February 21)

After breaking the taboo of erectile dysfunction in Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, Ayushmann Khurrana is back with Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan, and this time he will be seen romancing a man after an epic verdict of section 377. Our another point of interest in the film is seeing Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta together after Badhaai Ho.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

6. The True Story of Gunjan Saxena- The Kargil Girl (March 10)

After Dhadak in 2018, Janhvi Kapoor will be seen in the film essaying the lead. Gunjan Saxena was the first woman Air Force Pilot who went to war. Kapoor has some more big releases this year including Ghost Stories releasing January 1 on Netflix.

7. Rooh Afza (March 20)

A horror comedy by the Trapped director Hardik Mehta, Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkumar Rao will be pairing up for the first time in 2020. The makers have confirmed the film to be of the Stree genre where Kapoor will be seen in a double role.

8. ’83 (April 10)

Starring Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, the film is the tale of 1983 Cricket World Cup. Deepika Padukone will be seen playing his onscreen wife as well in the film after their marriage in 2018. The first look of the film was released much earlier, and the resemblance is uncanny.

9. Gulabo Sitabo (April 17)

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Gulabo Sitabo is a family comedy-drama, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana. The two characters in the film are shown to be from the states of Uttar Pradesh, and their story is full of comical aspects, and hilarity with day-to-day problems of a common man.

10. Brahmastra (May 2020)

Set to release somewhere around May in 2020, Brahmastra is a mythological trilogy with a big star cast of Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan and Mouni Roy.

11. Sadak 2 (July 10)

Sequel to 1991’s Sadak, Sadak 2 stars Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Pooja Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapoor. With this film, Mahesh Bhatt is returning after 20 years as a director.

12. Shamshera (July 31)

An action-adventure, starring Sanjay Dutt, Ranbir Kapoor and Vaani Kapoor. The film revolves around the lives of a dacoit tribe who fights for their rights against the British.

13. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (July 31)

Starring Kartik Aryan, Bhul Bulaiyaa 2 is a sequel to horror-comedy-drama Bhool Bhulaiyaa which had Akshay Kumar in the lead, directed by Priyadarshan.

14. Laal Singh Chaddha (December 25)

An adaptation of Tom Hank’s 1994 film, Forrest Gump, Laal Singh Chaddha is scheduled to be released on Christmas. In the movie, Aamir Khan will play the role of Tom Hanks, a man with a learning disability.

15. Dostana 2 (the release day is yet to be announced)

Another much-awaited sequel of the year is Dostana 2 which will be released somewhere around December. The prequel had a star cast of Priyanka Chopra Jonas, John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan; the sequel will see an entirely different star cast of Kartik Aryan, Janhvi Kapoor and Lakshya Lalwani.
