India's climate is influenced by several geographical and atmospheric factors that determine temperature, rainfall, wind patterns and seasonal variations across the country.

1. Latitude

India extends from about 8°4'N to 37°6'N latitude, with the Tropic of Cancer passing through its central part. The southern regions generally experience tropical conditions, while northern areas have greater seasonal variations in temperature.

2. Altitude

Temperature generally decreases with increasing altitude. Therefore, mountainous regions such as the Himalayas have much cooler climates than the plains. Higher elevations also influence rainfall by forcing moisture-laden winds to rise and cool.

3. Distance from the Sea

The Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean moderate the climate of coastal areas. Coastal regions generally experience smaller variations in temperature, while inland areas experience hotter summers and colder winters.

4. The Himalayan Mountains

The Himalayas act as a climatic barrier. They prevent extremely cold winds from Central Asia from entering much of northern India during winter. They also obstruct moisture-bearing monsoon winds, causing rainfall over large parts of the country.

5. Pressure and Wind Systems

Seasonal changes in atmospheric pressure influence India's wind patterns. During summer, low pressure develops over the heated landmass and attracts moisture-laden winds from the surrounding oceans. During winter, the pressure pattern changes, resulting in predominantly northeasterly winds.

6. Indian Monsoon

The Indian monsoon is one of the most important influences on the country's climate. The southwest monsoon brings most of India's annual rainfall between June and September. The Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal branches distribute rainfall across different parts of the country, while the northeast monsoon provides important rainfall to southeastern India.

7. Western Disturbances

Western disturbances are weather systems that move eastward from the Mediterranean region during winter. They bring rainfall to northwestern India and snowfall to parts of the western Himalayas. This winter precipitation is also important for crops such as wheat.

8. Relief and Topography

India's mountains, plateaus, plains and coastal regions influence local climate conditions. The Western Ghats, for example, force moisture-laden winds to rise and produce heavy rainfall on their western slopes, while areas on the leeward side receive considerably less rainfall.
