Location: GT Road, Near Allahabad Junction Station, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh

Located in Allahabad, Khusro Bagh is an exquisite example of Mughal architecture. The garden is believed to be commissioned by Emperor Jahangir in fond memory of his son Khusro, who was murdered by his brother Shah Jahan. Besides the Tomb of Khusro, this walled garden surrounds two other sandstone mausoleums – Tomb of Shah Begum and Tomb of Nithar.

The tomb of Khusro’s mother, Shah Begum, has a large chhatri (cenotaph) with beautiful Islamic inscriptions carved by Jahangir’s best calligrapher, Mir Abdullah Mushkin Qalam. It is believed that Shah Begum had committed suicide because of the strife between her husband and her son. The Tomb of Nithar, Khusro’s sister, lies on an elevated platform and is adorned with gorgeous panels and arch motifs. The roofs are decorated with intricate paintings with exceptional concentric patterns and stars, making it architecturally the best of all the three mausoleums. This tomb is said to be built between 1624 and 1625, while the Tomb of Khusro was completed in 1622.

Besides its historic grandeur, the Khusro Bagh is famous for mango and guava trees that adorn it. Visit the garden in the morning for its true essence, as it is less crowded at that time. Though the monuments are locked, one can experience the architectural marvel, sit or stroll around the lush gardens, capturing the picturesque charm of the structure.
