Chaukori

Living in the plains among the hustle and bustle of city life and then visiting mighty mountains for serenity is a totally different experience. One such unexplored and small but mesmerizing tourist spot that presents a great view of snow-capped Himalayan range is Chaukori. Chaukori is located in the Pithoragarh district in the Kumaon Division of Uttarakhand. The place is at a distance of 173 Kms from Nainital. To the north of Chaukori lies Tibet whereas to its south is Terai.

More than scenic beauty, Chaukori is visited, for its proximity to the Himalayas. The view of Nanda Devi and Panchchuli peaks is absolutely clear from Chaukori.

Chaukori offers a beautiful view of tea gardens from the British period that are not found anywhere else in Kumaon. The place is also bestowed with natural wealth, long pine trees, jungle and fruit orchards. One can enjoy the remarkable sunset and sunrise at Chaukori. One can also visit many ancient temples in Chaukori such as Kapileshwar Mahadev temple, Kedar temple, Mostamanu temple, Harinag temples and Arjuneshwar temple.

Apart from Chaukori, you can visit a very famous temple, Patal Bhuvneshwar, located at a distance of 38 Km from Chaukori on the road to Gangolihat. The Patal Bhuvneshwar temple is popular for its underground caves.

Gangolihat is a small hill town popular for its scenic beauty. It is located amidst of two rivers Saryu and Ramganga.The town is also well-known for many other temples like Haat Kalika, Ambika Dewaal, Chamunda Mandir, Vaishnavi Mandir. Most of the tourists visit Vaishnavi Mandir because of the spectacular view of the Himalayas from the temple.

Berinag is again a small hill station at a distance of 12 Km from Chaukori. It is a place worth seeing. Berinag has tea gardens that produce very high quality tea.

If you do not want to travel more, then you can spend your days in Chaukori by indulging yourself in activities like bird watching and taking a nature walk. If adventure sport is your cup of tea then you can also enjoy trekking, rock climbing and even rafting.

How to reach Chaukori?

The most convenient way to reach Chaukori from Delhi is combining rail and road journey (Delhi-Chaukori distance is 480 Kms). Board the Ranikhet Express till Kathgodam and from Kathgodam hire a taxi till Almora. The distance from Kathgodam to Almora can be covered in 2-3 hours. From Almora you can enjoy the ride in a shared jeep to reach Berinag. From Berinag, Chaukori is just a half-an-hour drive.

If you want to reach Chaukori by air then the nearest airport is located at Naini Saini at Pithoragarh. It is at a distance of about 91 Km from Chaukori. But there are no regular flights to this place.

The nearest railhead is Kathgodam located at a distance of about 198 Kms from Chaukori.
