The 5 Major Climate Zones and Their Key Features

Tropical Climate Zone

This band is located between about 0 and 23.5 degrees latitude and experiences relatively small temperature fluctuations between different seasons of the year. The rainfall is copious, and in certain sub-types, on an almost daily basis. Tropical rainforest zones, such as the Amazon Basin, remain moist all year long, and tropical savanna areas (parts of East Africa) experience a clear wet and dry season. Rainfall is generally moderate, with relatively equal amounts throughout the year.

Continental Climate Zone

The coldest regions of continental zones are located between 40th and 70th latitude and experience the largest amplitude of temperature fluctuations. It gets very cold in the winter, very warm in the summer, and the range between the two may be extreme. Much of Siberia and central Canada lie squarely in this region where coniferous forest is the dominant vegetation form and is frequently referred to as taiga.

Polar Climate Zone

Polar regions remain cold throughout most or all of the year after about 60° latitude. In tundra areas, the short summer thaw means mosses and low shrubs can survive, while in ice cap areas, such as the interior of Antarctica and much of Greenland, there is no thaw. The quantity of precipitation is generally low because cold air does not contain much water.
