History of Volkswagen Group

The Volkswagen Group was established in 1937 and began manufacturing their first ever car which achieved international recognition and acclaim under the name of Beetle.

The automaker’s creation developed quickly between the 1950s and ’60s and in 1965, the company procured Auto Union which helped in the production of the post-war Audi models. In the 1970s, Volkswagen launched a new generation of front-wheel-drive passenger vehicles which included the Passat, Polo and Golf, with the latter becoming their bestseller.

By 1986 Volkswagen had a controlling stake in SEAT, making it their first non-German brand. In the subsequent years, the conglomerate gained control over many companies such as Skoda in 1994, Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti in 1998, Scania in 2008 and Ducati, MAN and Porsche in 2012.

The Auto manufacturer’s operations in China developed quickly in the previous decade with the nation turning into its biggest market.

The German automotive company entered the Indian market in 2007. Volkswagen AG, Wolfsburg, Germany wholly owns the Indian subsidiary, Volkswagen Group India.

The headquarters of Volkswagen Group India is located in Chakan, Pune, Maharashtra. The facility has a production capacity of two lakh units a year. Many flagship models such as Polo, Vento, Ameo, Jetta and Passat are manufactured in the Chakan plant itself, whereas those such as the Tiguan and Touareg are imported as completely built-up units (CBUs).

What’s new with Volkswagen

As mentioned, Volkswagen is amidst an enormous change towards the electrification of their passenger vehicles. Among their most recent introductions to the international drive for sustainable mobility is their ID series of passenger cars.

Their latest addition to the series is the ID Crozz – a compact SUV to make its mark in the sub-4metre category with electric power.

The ID Crozz utilizes an 83-kilowatt lithium-ion battery, which gives power to a 102 horsepower electric-motor at the front and a 204horsepower setup at the back. This provides the car with a total output of 306 horsepower producing a peak of 450 Newton-metre torque. Volkswagen claims that the ID Crozz has a range of over 500 kilometres on a full charge, with its top speed restricted to 180 kilometres per hour.

It first appeared at the 2017 Shanghai motor show and has developed from just an idea at that point, and the final result is due for unveiling in April 2020. There could still be more changes to the model.

The car’s coupe-like roofline will probably clear a path for a conventional rooftop, while a traditional hinged arrangement will replace the backsliding entryways. Sitting on 21-inch wheels, the ID Crozz has short overhangs with a long-wheelbase position, that helps in expanding the space underfloor for the battery pack, a feature that characterizes electric vehicles. Volkswagen has stated that the ID Crozz brings together the design of a sports car with the rough terrain ability of an SUV.

Lengthwise, the ID Crozz is quite similar to the Tiguan’s seven-seater variant Allspace. The four-seat cabin is moderate, minimalistic and is intended to give an airy sense of space. The SUV is filled to the brim with tech, some of them being augmented reality, e-mirrors that are wired to display from the combined feed of three cameras. There is also a heads-up display and a virtual shade for the panoramic glass sunroof which is controlled by gestures. There’s a self-ruling driving mode which can be activated by voice control function or by pressing the “VW” logo on the steering wheel.

The production-spec ID Crozz will be released in April 2020, and it will be intriguing to see the amount of the concept’s structure, tech and highlights that the production-spec variant adheres to.

The Auto Expo 2020 has given us a look at the next generation of Volkswagen passenger offerings which will accompany their ID Crozz electric SUV idea.

The company plans to launch the production version of this car in India by 2021.
