Born to two iconic parents, actor Rakhee and poet-lyricist Gulzar, Meghna Gulzar chose an industry which is inordinately hegemonized by men. Though over the years, from a few women filmmakers like Deepa Mehta and Aparna Sen, cinema is witnessing more sensible directors like Meghna Gulzar, Zoya Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, to name a few.

But, as a filmmaker, Gulzar has focused on not only films which are female-oriented but also diversified various subjects and explored ordinary human sensibilities. She started from her debut film Filhaal which was released in 2002, and it talks about surrogacy. It was way ahead of its time to Chhapaak, which is a need-of-the-hour subject. Though women in her films have a dominant role, the subject she chooses is beyond any categorization.
