One of the major attractions of the city, Ulsoor Lake is the biggest as well as the oldest lake in Bangalore. The origin of the lake dates back to the 2nd century when the lake was called “Halsur” or “Alasur”. Constructed by the then ruler of Bangalore, Kempe Gowda II, Ulsoor Lake spreads over 1.5 km in area and is dotted with a number of islands. Ulsoor Lake is one of the most crowded tourist destinations in Bangalore. Boating facilities available here not only attract the tourists but are also enjoyed by the locals who come to the lake for jogging. The tradition of immersing the Ganesha Idol on the eve of Ganesha Chaturthi is also practiced at the lake. The lake is surrounded by a number of tourist attractions like a recreational complex, a Sikh Shrine, an ancient temple and a children’s park.
