If you think that Sherlock Holmes is the smartest crime detective ever known, you probably have no idea about the intellect of the Indian mind! Meet Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, India’s very own crime sleuth, who may not be a quintessential hero but is definitely no less than a star. More than eighty years after the brilliant Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay created the fictional character of Byomkesh Bakshy, director Dibakar Banerjee takes us back to that historical phase with much precision and finesse!
Plot: Dibakar Banerjee’s Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, transports us back to the early 40s when the country was being battered by the cascading effect of the Second World War. While trying to fix up the case of his classmate’s missing father, Byomkesh unknowingly stumbles upon a dangerous game plan that could threaten the future of Calcutta. How does this genius mind unscramble the game plan forms the crux of the story.
Performance: Ever since his debut, Sushant Singh Rajput has been progressively proving himself as a brilliant actor. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is his best shot so far! He is amazingly dexterous in slipping into the character and makes good use of his talent. Undoubtedly, a start in the making!
After winning accolades for his mastery in Ship of Theseus, Neeraj Kabi delivers yet another impressive performance. His proficiency and control over his acting abilities make him the perfect fit for his role.
Anand Tiwari is remarkably natural and gives good support to the film.
While Swastika Mukherjee looks absolutely plain in emotion, Divya Menon still manages to impress with her charm.
Music: As a crime thriller, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy didn’t really need a music album to evoke interest. But what is Bollywood without music? The film has a long list of composers who have diligently worked together to compose some unique tracks for the film. But unfortunately, the compositions are quite unusual and fail to impress the listeners. Best one- Calcutta Kiss!
What’s Good: An intriguing crime thriller that holds up the suspense right till the end, adorned with an intelligent execution and perfect detailing. An interesting storyline keeps you glued to your chair throughout the film. The cinematic representation of the historical era is breathtakingly life-like.
What’s Bad: Too many details may confuse the ones who are not used to watching tight crime thrillers.
After showcasing profound talent in his films like Khosla ka Ghosla and Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye!, Dibakar Banerjee is back to impress you with yet another fascinating creation called Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! Brimming with ample elements of suspense and thrill, the film is an earnest recreation of the classic character that was sketched years ago. This is definitely one of the best crime mysteries ever solved in Bollywood!
Verdict: You cannot afford to miss this one!
