This assembly constituency has always been a BJP stronghold, which won this seat thrice (2003, 1998, and 1993). In fact, Congress has also a significant presence here. The Indian National Congress (INC) won this assembly twice (2008 and 2003). The entire arithmetic of vote sharing became topsy-turvy with the entry of AAP in 2013. While AAP’s Jitender Singh Tomar lost the 2013 assembly election by a slender margin (2,809 votes) to BJP’s Nand Kishore Garg, Tomar bounced back in 2015 to rest the seat from Garg at a margin of 22,307 votes.
Though Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) initially announced sitting MLA Jitender Singh Tomar as the candidate, later it changed the candidate to Preeti Tomar (wife of Jitender Singh Tomar) after Delhi High Court set aside the election of Jitendra Tomar for giving wrong declaration regarding his educational qualifications in the nomination papers during 2015 assembly election.
