Why do earthquakes occur more frequently in certain parts of the world?
Earthquakes occur more frequently in certain parts of the world because these regions are located near tectonic plate boundaries. Earth's outer layer is divided into large tectonic plates that constantly move, although usually only a few centimetres each year. When these plates collide, move apart, or slide past one another, stress can build up in the rocks along faults. When the accumulated stress is suddenly released, it produces an earthquake.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is one of the world's most active earthquake zones because several tectonic plates meet around the Pacific Ocean. Countries such as Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, and parts of the Americas experience frequent earthquakes in this region. The Himalayan region is another active zone, where the Indian Plate is pushing northward against the Eurasian Plate.
Earthquakes can also occur within tectonic plates, although these are generally less frequent. The frequency and strength of earthquakes therefore vary according to local geology, tectonic activity, and the presence of active faults.
