Earth's core remains extremely hot because it retains a vast amount of heat left over from the planet's formation about 4.5 billion years ago. During Earth's formation, repeated collisions between planetary materials and the sinking of heavy elements such as iron toward the center generated enormous amounts of heat. Because the core is surrounded by thousands of kilometers of rock and is under immense pressure, this heat escapes very slowly.

Another important source of heat is the radioactive decay of elements such as uranium, thorium, and potassium within Earth's interior. These elements continuously release energy as they decay, helping maintain the extreme temperatures deep underground. The heat from the core also drives convection in the liquid outer core, which contributes to the generation of Earth's magnetic field and plays an important role in the planet's geological activity.
