Nalanda is significant in the history of education in ancient India because it became one of the most important centres of higher learning in the ancient world. Located in present-day Bihar, Nalanda Mahavihara was established during the Gupta period, traditionally associated with the reign of Kumaragupta I in the 5th century CE. It attracted students and scholars from across India and other parts of Asia, including China, Korea, Tibet, and Central Asia.
Nalanda was known for the study of Buddhist philosophy as well as subjects such as logic, grammar, medicine, mathematics, and astronomy. It functioned as a residential centre of learning, with monasteries, lecture halls, libraries, and facilities for students and teachers. Chinese travellers Xuanzang and Yijing recorded valuable accounts of Nalanda and its scholarly traditions.
Nalanda also played an important role in spreading Indian knowledge and Buddhist learning across Asia. Its ruins today represent India's ancient tradition of organised higher education and remain an important archaeological and heritage site.
