What is ‘Know Your College’ Portal?

Know Your College Portal

There’s no denial of the fact that the Modi government comes up with ideas that can work for India. One such idea is the ‘Know Your College’ portal. Apparently, it is just a kind of a directory which will act as a one-stop shop for students and their parents across the country. However, there’s more to it. When the HRD Ministry had launched the portal in November 2014, it had stated that the website would “help the students make an informed decision on the choice of college and the courses”.

About the Know Your College Portal

This portal provides information about the colleges across the country, including their fee structure, details of faculty, faculty-student ratio, hostels and other facilities available.
The launch of the portal was Prime Minister Modi’s long-term vision for creating an appropriate framework for the students seeking various information about the colleges. Often, students are not able to select the college or institution they wish to study in and for helping all those students, the portal has been launched so that it can help them take informed decision further.

Purpose of the Portal

An important reason for the launch of this portal is that the government wants to keep a check on several private and autonomous institutions. Through this portal, the government tries to monitor such institutions in a way that the students who find any kind of anomaly in the information provided on the website about the college will now have the option of taking the issue to the regulator.

This initiative has somewhat ensured that all the institutions across the country follow proper standards and systems so that any deserving student does not feel shortchanged when it comes to enjoying the basic right to education.

Instead of looking for different websites, both the parents and the students can now get to know the name of the contact person for every college along with information on courses offered, annual fees, anti-ragging committee, student count, details of laboratories, library and hostel.

Apart from the portal, a ‘fee committee’ has also been formed that aims at keeping an eye on the amount of fees being charged by the different institutions. This portal, thus, provides much of the important information for the students all at one place. One can even find other useful links on the website like the information about the student scholarships and many e-learning platforms.

The students will find repository called the ‘Project Factory’ from where they can download as well as upload various projects. The website also encourages the parents and students to register and submit their complaints and grievances on the portal.

Conclusion

This way, the government has not only helped the regular students who can afford education, but also those students of the weaker sections of the society who are unable to gather information. The portal enables students to find every bit of information about the scholarship programmes.

In totality, the ‘Know your college’ portal is a commendable initiative by the HRD ministry to help students take informed decision for their future.
