About Brothers

After proving his stance with the success of Agneepath, Karan Malhotra is all game with yet another remake Brothers which has been officially adapted from the critically acclaimed 2011 Hollywood film Warrior, directed by Gavin O’Connor. Be it an adaptation from the South, or a remake of a Hollywood hit, with remakes there is always a challenge of execution, of coming up with something that should appeal to the masses and establish itself with its own uniqueness. Starring Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra, the trailer of the movie got acclaim, but did this remake actually make big on the silver screen? Let’s find out!

Plot: Two brothers, David (Akshay) and Monty (Sidharth), both having their own reasons to get on to the battlefield as street fighters and fate bringing them against each other for “R2F” or “Right to Fight” Championship. Their father, Garson (Jackie Shroff) is in an emotional tiff, not knowing whom to support or who he actually wants to win, as he had never anticipated this situation.

Brothers Music:

The album of Brothers is a collection of five songs, composed by Ajay-Atul and Amitabh Bhattacharya has given the lyrics. Overall the music of the movie is appealing and particularly two of the songs – ‘Sapna Jahan’ and ‘Gaaye Jaa’ – are absolutely beautiful. ‘Mera Naam Mary’ is a vivacious item number that is already spelling its charm with its high energy.

Performance:

A typical Bollywood tadka to a Hollywood action film, is what you would get to see in this movie. With love, tear, emotions, hatred and revenge, the movie takes you through emotional heaps and lows throughout its course. Those who have not watched Warrior would obviously be engrossed with this action-packed-drama, but if you have, then you surely are bound to be over-critical about the performances and the desi elements that have been injected into the story.

Jackie Shroff as Gary Fernandez was a good watch in the movie. He indeed made an impact gelling up well with his character which he swayed with his coercive performance.

Where Akshay Kumar seemed to be a perfect choice for the role of David, Sidharth Malhotra could not match up to what his character demanded. The Khiladi of Bollywood is always a desirable watch when it comes to action, and with his balanced performance and conviction in Brothers, Akshay ruled most of the movie. Maybe it was more challenging for Sidharth to match up to what Tom Hardy did in Warrior. Sidharth appeared to be physically toned for the character, but his attitude and expression could not impress the audience.

Jacqueline Fernandez was pleasing as David’s wife, Jenny and was modest in her performance. After creating ripples with her glamorous looks in most of her films, this time she was seen in a deglam avatar and did quite well with clean execution of her role as a caring mother and a loving wife.

In contrast to her role in Dil Dhadakne Do, Shefali Shah in Brothers is seen as a simple, middle-class lady who struggles emotionally to keep her family together. Though her character adds most of the drama to the film, she was exceptional in her performance as ever.

Ashutosh Rana as David’s coach and Kiran Kumar as the organiser of the R2F championship, both were seen in supporting roles.

Controlled emotional quotient, tighter character sketches and better editing could have worked wonders for the movie.

What’s good:

If you are all game to watch a drama-cum-action movie and have not watched Warrior, this wont be a disappointment. The movie takes a better pace in the second half though. A few scene are well executed and performed, particularly the emotional outburst of Jackie Shroff, and the scene where both the brothers gear up for the competition and undergo strenuous training.

What’s bad:

Though ravishing Kareena Kapoor sizzled and glowed in the item number, ‘Mera naam Mary’ but the song actually felt like a misfit in accordance to the situation in the film. Though it’s an adaption of a Hollywood movie, but too much of melodrama and over the top background scores during the fights made it even more dramatic.

Verdicts: Cheering these Brothers this weekend wont be a bad idea.

Brothers Rating: ***

Here are some Trivia about the movie –

  • Lionsgate, the producer of Warrior partnered for the production of Brothers.
  • As per sources, Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra were an ideal choice for the movie as both of them practice martial arts in real life!
  • For Brothers, the two actors even started with their martial arts aggressive sessions five months prior to their shooting schedule.
  • ‘K3G with MMA’ where MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts – This is how Sidharth Malhotra explains the movie in one line!
