The problem with success is that it builds a lot of expectations around you. So, the next time you perform, you are supposed to do even better than the first. This is exactly what has happened with Zoya Akhtar this time. Four years after the commendable success of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, the director is back with yet another modish piece – Dil Dhadakne Do. This family drama deals with the quandaries of the rich class.
Plot: An affluent yet dysfunctional family sets out on a cruise trip that ends up changing their lives forever.
Performances: To begin with the senior most actor amongst the lot, Anil Kapoor takes over the film right from the start. He is brilliant with his expressions and perfect in his demeanour.
Another commendable performance comes from a wonderful actress, Shefali Shah. She is excellent in her role of an elite woman! She holds on to her character with lot of conviction and does a fantastic job in adding humour and emotion to the film.
Ranveer Singh, with his usual goofy self, makes the movie light and enjoyable. A good performance, so to say.
Priyanka Chopra is quite impressive in her role of a frustrated wife. She emotes well and makes her character look convincing.
Both Anushka Sharma and Farhan Akhtar have a short cameo in the film. While there isn’t much to explore in Anushka’s character, watching Farhan even for a short while was truly delightful.
Rahul Bose, as an imposing husband, does a good job on his part.
Music: When a combination of talented composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and lyricist Javed Akhtar comes to work, you definitely expect a lot! But unfortunately, the music album of Dil Dhadakne Do turns out to be a disappointment. The only exception in the album is the song “Galla Goodiyan”, a foot-tapping dance number for sure.
What’s Good: Sincere performances by all the actors anchor the film till the end. Dil Dhadakne Do appropriately mocks the elite society and their hidden disjunctions. There is enough humour to keep you amused and emotional triggers to draw you towards the movie. The dialogues are witty and so is the unique narration of the film. Just like ZNMD, Dil Dhadakne do is also a traveller’s delight in terms of cinematography. Beautiful locations of Istanbul are the new Spain for Zoya Akhtar!
What’s Bad: Dil Dhadakne Do loses big time on plot. It is over-used and has been dragged unnecessarily. Even the sub-plots are too weak and meaningless! More of Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma was needed in the film. The music album is sadly avoidable with just one chartbuster to be enjoyed. The film definitely needed better editing.
With success comes great responsibility of holding on to your prowess and showcasing your talent over and over again. Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do does not prove to be an exceptionally compelling film like ZNMD but it definitely scores good on entertainment. As a quintessential family drama film, it touches upon issues that are realistic and relatable.
Verdict: Relish the weekend with your family by watching this entertaining family drama!
