Year 2015 seems to be giving a lukewarm treatment to Bollywood as the films that are creating expectations are turning out to be big bluffs one after the other. This week’s release, Mohit Suri’s Hamari Adhuri Kahani becomes yet another unfortunate addition to the list. Having delivered a good number of hits in the past, the much talented duo, Emraan Hashmi and Mohit Suri, come together after a long break. A painful romantic journey, Hamari Adhuri Kahani is a love story that reaches a tragic end.

Plot: A single mother and a struggling wife, Vasudha finds love in a multi-millionaire Aarav Ruparel who promises her a better future ahead. But as soon as she decides to step out of her marriage, her terrorist husband returns home only to burden her with the guilt of infidelity. What happens to this incomplete love story is what forms the crux of the film.

Performances: Hamari Adhuri Kahani fails to utilise the unbound potential of two of the most talented actors of the industry. Both Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan rigorously try to bring the best out of a half-baked plot. But even their honest efforts fail to do justice to the film. While the emotional sequences save the job for Vidya, for Emraan it’s the teary-eyed scenes that leave a lasting impression. Their sincerity in work is clearly visible and needs to be appreciated.

Another gem of an actor who has been wasted in the film is Rajkumar Rao! It’s sad to see him take up such a minimal role, which is somewhat a disgrace for a potentially blessed actor like him! Nonetheless, he stays true to his work and delivers yet another impeccable performance.

Music: The best part of a Mohit Suri film is its sensational music album that takes over the audience. The music of Hamari Adhuri Kahani forms the soul of the film. Each and every song is beautifully written. The compositions leave you mesmerised with the pain of love and urge you to play the soundtracks on loop. The best one, of course, is the title song of the film, which is probably one of the most thoughtful compositions of the year so far!

What’s Good: The film starts off well and maintains the momentum till the first half. The music is heart-touching and so is the background score. Both Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan deliver good performances on their part. Some of the dialogues may find a place in your heart.

What’s Bad: A half-baked plot tainted with clichéd dialogues and sequences. Despite being woefully painful, the love story fails to sting the audience. In the second half, the plot went haywire.

When a talented director like Mohit Suri and a powerful actor like Emraan Hashmi come to work together, you naturally expect a lot. But as they say, expectations can sometimes lead to bigger disappointments! Unfortunately, the magic of this duo fails to work for this film. Hamari Adhuri Kahani stays true to its name and ends up with loose ends and a sense of incompleteness. The over-dramatic cinematic liberties taken by Mohit Suri can only impress you if you are a die-hard fan of make-believe love stories!

Verdict: Watch this ‘adhuri kahani’ only if you are a true fan of Emraan Hashmi.
