In an unexpected move Najeeb Jung, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has put in his papers. It now seems the people of Delhi would no longer have to witness the frequent and, at times, extremely bitter fights between the LG and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This new development has taken a lot of people by surprise as Jung still has another one year and eight months left in office.

It is unclear at the moment as to what was the reason behind the LG’s sudden resignation, but media reports state Jung as saying that he would be going back to what he loves the most – academics. In fact, Najeeb Jung, who joined the IAS way back in 1973, served in the various capacities in the 22 years while he was in service. He resigned from the IAS and joined academics. Prior to becoming the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi in 2013, he was the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi.

Najeeb Jung’s tenure as the LG of Delhi was a turbulent one as he crossed swords with CM Arvind Kejriwal on several occasions and the news found its way to the front pages of national newspapers. But, Najeeb Jung had the last laugh when in August 2016, the Delhi High Court made it clear that the LG was the ultimate authority in the National Capital Region (NCR). However, Jung did not let the bitterness come in his way and thanked the CM for all the help rendered during his tenure as the administrator of the NCR.

The unexpected way in which his resignation came about has set tongues wagging. While the opposition is stating that Jung may not have been happy with the ruling establishment – the BJP, the centre is saying that the resignation was Jung’s personal decision.
