India’s Medal hope
The multi-sporting event sees a host of countries compete in various events, after every four years the venue for the Commonwealth Games is changed, and this year Gold Coast City in Australia is going to host the sporting extravaganza. India, which hosted the games for the first time in 2010, has made a mark for itself in last two Commonwealth Games.
This year too Indian contingent would be looking to make the fellow countrymen proud with their medal-winning performances. Although the Indian contingent for the upcoming games looks strong, there are few athletes from different sports who look set to claim the prestigious medals. Here’s the list of athletes who look certain to bag medals in their respective discipline:
Sakshi Malik, Wrestling
The Olympic Bronze-medalist has made the country proud with her performances at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Rio Olympics. The grappler from Haryana burst on to the wrestling scene when she won a silver medal in the 2014 Glasgow Games after she lost her Final bout to Aminat Adeniyi of Nigeria.
Following her success in the Commonwealth Games, Sakshi finished with a Bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Doha in 2015. The highlight of her young career came in 2016 Rio Games when the Indian wrestler made a sensational comeback to defeat Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan and become the first Indian female wrestler to win the Olympic medal.
Sakshi Malik is now 25 years-old, with the burden on her shoulders and with positive momentum going into the games after winning a silver medal in the Asian Wrestling Championship held in Delhi. The wrestler would love to upgrade on her performance four years ago in Glasgow and clinch the elusive gold medal.
Kidambi Srikanth, Badminton
The shuttler hailing from Andhra Pradesh has certainly made his mark within the Badminton circuit challenging the dominance of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean badminton players. His first outing at the Commonwealth Games was in Glasgow four years ago as a young 21-year-old shuttler, trying to find a place among the elites of the badminton circuit but to his discontent, Srikanth bowed out in the first round.
In this four year period, Kidambi Srikanth has made a name for himself within the circuit, as his failure in the Glasgow Games transformed him into a world-beater. In 2016 Rio Olympics, the Indian shuttler reached quarter-finals, where after a hard-fought match he lost to two-time Olympic gold medalist Lin Dan of China. Since then, P. Gopichand mentored and coached him into a fantastic player, who is now set to challenge the elites within the game.
Kidambi’s recent run is something that will make his opponents be wary of the Indian shuttler. Srikanth created history in 2017. He became the first Indian player to win four Superseries tournaments after clinching Indonesia Open, Australia Open, Denmark Open, and finally topped it off with winning French Open title. Kidambi Srikanth’s journey has been sensational from bowing out in the first round in Glasgow games to clinching four Superseries titles, he would be looking to make amends with his disappointment in Commonwealth games by bagging a medal in Gold Coast City games.
Jitu Rai, Shooting
Jitu Rai, born in Nepal, he migrated to India and joined the Indian Army which gave him the platform to show his shooting ability. In 2014, Jitu Rai bagged several medals in 50m pistol and 10m air pistol event during Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and ISSF World Cup.
He clinched gold medal in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in 50m pistol event while winning the gold medal in Glasgow games by creating CWG record in qualification and finals. Rai faced disappointment when he finished last in the finals of Rio Olympics in 2016, he shrugged off his disappointment and later in the year he went onto secure silver medal in ISSF World Cup Final. The Indian shooter will be looking to achieve a similar feat to that of Glasgow Games in the upcoming Commonwealth Games on southern coast city of Australia.
PV Sindhu, Badminton
Bronze medalist at the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, PV Sindhu broke out of the shadows of Saina Nehwal since her Bronze medal in Glasgow Games. The third rank Indian shuttler has had an incredible journey ever since 2014 Commonwealth Games.
She bagged a bronze in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in Badminton in the Rio Olympics, with sensational performances till the finals where she eventually lost to Carolina Marina after an intense final.
She avenged her Olympic finals defeat by beating Carolina Marin in the India Open Superseries. In the same year, she bagged a silver medal in the BWF World Championships. PV Sindhu would be looking to better her performance in Gold Coast by bagging the elusive gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, she is India’s best hope for a gold medal.
Neeraj Chopra, Javelin
The 20-year old javelin thrower from Panipat has been hailed as “once in a generation” athlete by his former coach Garry Calvert, while former World Championships bronze-medalist and Indian athlete Anju Bobby George hailed him as a promising young Indian talent.
Neeraj looks to sharpen his skills and get acclimatised with the weather conditions in Gold Coast, as he hopes to bring a medal for the country in the Commonwealth Games. His strong performances in the last year have made him a part of the Indian athletics contingent for the Gold Coast games, Neeraj Chopra has certainly proved his pedigree to compete against the elites of the game.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu
The Indian female weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the 48 kg weight category in the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Manipur-born weightlifter has been in great form going into this year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast City, Australia.
She qualified for the finals in Rio Olympics but failed to register even a single attempt out of the three lifts in the finals. In 2017, Chanu created a world record by lifting 194 kg in total during the finals at World Weightlifting Championships in California, USA. During the Gold Coast games she would look to better her silver medal by converting it into the all-important gold medal.
Indian traveling contingent for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is one of the strongest ever as 220 athletes will be participating in 14 different sports, athletes look to bring home the glory of Commonwealth Games.
Apart from the individual names mentioned there are other individuals and teams aiming to secure medals and better the medals tally from the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010, which till date remains the best medals tally India has ever achieved in the Commonwealth Games.
