When Air Kazakhstan was closed in the year 2004 by the Government, Air Astana then became Kazakhstan's national bearer. The airline is a joint venture enterprise having being owned by the Government of Kazakhstan (51%) and BAE Systems (49%). Frequency of Air Astana flights have been increased to Bangkok, Istanbul, Frankfurt, and Moscow.
Air Astana does not belong to any alliance of the global airlines but shares code agreements with carriers like Latvia airBaltic (Riga), South Korea Asiana Airlines (Seoul Incheon), Austria Austrian Airlines (Vienna) and Netherlands KLM (Amsterdam).
