What is the scheme?

In order to cater to the needs of pregnant women in the state of Karnataka, the government of Karnataka has launched a scheme called as the “Mathru Poorna” scheme to aid 12 lakh pregnant women and lactating mothers in the state of Karnataka. Mathru Poorna scheme was launched by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah on Monday. The Mathru Poorna Scheme extends to all the thirty districts of the state of Karnataka.

Who will be benefited from this scheme?

The Mathru Poorna’ Scheme has come as a miracle for women in the state of Karnataka. As not only is it beneficial for mother-to-be but has come up as a boon for her child. Aiming at providing nutritious food to approximately 12 lakh pregnant women as well as lactating mothers, this scheme caters to reduce nutrition deficiency among pregnant women. As per the Scheme, Mathru Poorna, for approximately 25 days in a month, free-mid day meal will be provided to pregnant and lactating women in the rural areas. Provisions have been made to serve these meals at the Anganwadi Centers across 30 districts of the state of Karnataka. Besides providing nutritious food, the Mathru Poorna Scheme will also be beneficial in providing maternity benefits, nutritional supplements along with providing counseling to the lactating women as well as pregnant women. As per the scheme, from the beginning of their pregnancy free meals will be served along with following six months after they deliver their babies. Thereby, catering to the nutritional development of not only the mothers-to-be but also for the well being of the child.  According to the Mathru Poorna scheme, pregnant or lactating mothers will have to come to the Anganwadi for meals. This scheme will not only provide free food, but Iron Folic Acid tablets will also be provided. For pregnant women, gestation weight will also be administered. Approximately 40-45% of daily calorie, protein and calcium requirement per day of pregnant and lactating mothers will be met by the Mathru Poorna scheme. Free meals under the Mathru Poorna scheme will include green vegetables, rice, dal/sambhar, pulses, boiled egg/sprouted legumes, along with 200ml milk.

What is the aim of govt behind this scheme?

During the financial year 2017-2018, approximately Rs. 302 crore has been set aside by the state government of Karnataka. With this Mathru Poorna scheme, the government of Karnataka aims to reduce nutritional deficiency among pregnant women as well as lactating mothers. The scheme aims to bridge the gap between the recommended dietary allowance and the average daily intake of lactating mothers as well as pregnant women.
