Tamil Nadu witnessed an impressive voting across 232 constituencies . Despite heavy rains, frequent power cuts and reports of technical snags in EVMs, the people managed to cast their vote under the vigilance of more than 300 companies of paramilitary personnel. Elaborate security arrangements were made at all 66,007 booths across the state.
Voting Percentage
While Tamil Nadu witnessed 73.76% voter turnout at the end of the polling, Chennai recorded the lowest polling in the state.
Candidates in Fray
As per the estimate, 5.82 crore voters were eligible to cast their vote and seal the fate of around 3,740 candidates across the state. While Jayalalithaa sounded highly optimistic about AIADMK’s victory, DMK treasurer M. K. Stalin mounted an attack on her for allegedly distributing cash for votes in two constituencies.
In a first such mulch-cornered contest in Tamil Nadu, the DMK-Congress alliance expects to make a comeback. Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram said that the DMK-Congress alliance will get a good majority and “a regime change will happen.”
Polling Postponed in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi
In a final hour decision, the Election Commission postponed the elections to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur constituencies as “huge flow of money” was reported few days ahead of the elections. The elections to these constituencies will be held on 23 May and the results will be counted on 25 May.
M.K. Stalin today sought CBI inquiry into alleged distribution of money in these constituencies where the election was postponed.
Violence during Tamil Nadu Elections
There were several incidents of violence across the state with the first one being reported from the Oddanchatram constituency where two DMK workers were injured during a tussle with AIADMK supporters. In Nilakottai, police lathicharged to disperse the AIADMK and DMK cadres who clashed over transporting voters to booth. The workers of the two rival parties also clashed in Theni over bogus voting. Violence was also reported in Injambakkam where a 34-year-old AIADMK cadre was admitted to Royapettah GH after he received stab injuries.
