There is just so much camouflaged in the vicinity of Delhi that every single minute can take you by surprise if you try to explore. No matter how confident you are about knowing your city well, there are fair chances of your knowledge taking a back seat. While meandering in the streets of Civil Lines, I stumbled upon a hidden treasure that I had not known about despite being a Delhite! It was the amazing Tibetan Market.

The market stunned me with its magnanimous aura and a peculiar location. An unremarkable gate under the ISBT Shahdara Link Flyover leads you to this little Tibet in Delhi. The market is run by a large group of Tibetans welcoming you with smiling faces. A huge crowd of buyers and sellers flocks the market most of the time. Tibetan market is a popular shopping hub for the students residing in the Delhi University campus.

History

The entire region surrounding the Tibetan Market is inhabited by the refugees from the Tibet. What began with a small locality for the fugitives has now turned into a much popular shopping destination in Delhi. The fame and name the market mounted over the passing years led to the christening of the market with the name of Monastery Market.

What it Offers

Tibetan market is known for a resplendent collection of winter clothing. Homemade woollen clothes are especially brought to the market and sold at unbelievable prices. Apart from these, people come there for buying exclusive shawls and stylish jackets available at cheaper prices. Tourists and other shopaholics specially visit this market for the exquisite Tibetan artefacts like paintings, statues, antiques, wooden lamps, incense and jewellery. A good range of stylish footwear and leather products also finds a worth in this market. Brass items like Tibetan bric-a-brac, Om and several other things of interest can be found in this small Tibetan world. And when you get tired shopping, you can enjoy some scrumptious Tibetan food like Momos, Thukpa and Noodles.

Tibetan Market is one of the most popular budget markets in Delhi and is therefore crowded most of the time. Tourists and University students are seen to be the frequent visitors here. The great deal of stuff the Tibetans put forward on sale is very impressive and worthy of buying. Once you step into the market, you might just think of it as a different place altogether. The smiling faces of the Tibetans keep you engaged so much so that you end up spending the whole day there. Tibetan Market or the Monastery Market is a must-visit place for the splurging shopaholics.
