Education in Patna
Patna, the capital of Bihar, has an edge in education. Good facilities in the myriad fields of education attract many students not only from the rural areas of Bihar, but neighbouring states as well. Civil services and public administration are two fields that Patna specialises in. Many aspirants flock to the city for instructions in the same.
Secondary Schools
In Patna, schools are of 2 kinds.
Government Schools: These schools are affiliated to Bihar School Examination Board. They follow the K-12 pattern. BSEB conducts 2 examinations in a year; secondary and higher secondary. The higher secondary examinations are conducted in specific streams, viz. science, arts or commerce. BSEB also conducts other departmental examinations for students, such as Diploma in Physical Training and Teachers Training Examination. The standard of these schools is not at par with those of private schools, as when the government took them over from private hands, its bureaucrats, who were more into managing law and order situations, were ill equipped to handle the field of education.
Private schools/Missionary schools: Kendriya Vidyalayas and a few of the elite schools in Patna are affiliated to CBSE and ICSE boards. These schools provide quality education. They follow the K-12 all India pattern as per the board they are affiliated to. The students appear for a board exam at the end of Class X in the general stream and then opt for specific streams in Class XI and XII (science, arts, commerce). On successful completion of Class XII boards, the students become eligible for college. Some prominent missionary schools in Patna are St. Joseph's Convent School and St. Michael's High School, which were established during the British Raj.
Colleges
Most of the colleges in Patna are affiliated to the Patna University. The university offers both undergraduate and post-graduate levels in fields like law, arts, science, commerce, medicine and engineering. Vanijya Mahavidyalaya, R. P. S. Institute of Technology, Women's Training College, A. N. College, B. N. Collegiate School and Veterinary College are some of the top colleges affiliated to Patna University. The city boasts of an IIT campus. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna Medical College and Nalanda Medical College are some renowned medical colleges. More recently established Chanakya Law University and Chandragupt Institute of Management also deserve a mention.
