Education in Pune

The first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had called Pune the "Oxford of the East"; and rightly so, Pune offers the choicest of schools and colleges and attracts students from all over the world.

Secondary Schools

Public Schools: Public schools in Pune are run by the Pune Municipal Corporation. These schools are affiliated to Maharashtra State Board. The pattern is K-10, after which the students appear for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Examination. On passing this exam, the students are eligible for higher secondary school or junior college in specific streams. On passing the Higher School Certificate (HSC) Examination, these students gain admission in colleges. The mode of instruction in most of the public schools is Marathi.

Private Schools: They come under the purview of NIOS, CBSE, or ICSE. All these schools follow the all India pattern of 10+2. After passing the Class X board exams, the students gain admission in Class XI in specific streams (science, arts or commerce). On successful completion of class XII boards, they become eligible for college. The medium of instruction is English.

Many of the public schools in Pune are more than a century old, and the New English School started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak deserves a mention here.
