Why did AIADMK win in Tamil Nadu?

Tamil Nadu Election Results 2016

Jayalalithaa’s incredible victory in Tamil Nadu is an apt rebuff to the opinion polls that had predicted her defeat. Jayalalithaa has stormed back to power and what makes her victory important is the fact that she had been able to thwart the anti-incumbency factor – a trade mark of Tamil Nadu politics. She has been criticized for her handling of the Chennai floods. Even then, as compared to other parties, she has attracted the maximum crowds this poll season. Reports suggest that every rally that Jayalalithaa addressed saw a turnout between 40,000 and a whopping 100,000.

So, what is it that has compelled people to choose Jayalalithaa over the DMK once again?

Freebie Politics

Jayalalithaa has endeared herself to the masses of Tamil Nadu by implementing schemes that have been highly beneficial to the students, women and in general people of the state even though they have cost the exchequer crores of rupees.

She undertook some noble initiatives for the poor such as distributing four goats and a cow to every family below the poverty line and providing mixer-grinders and fans to people who were poor enough to buy them. Her initiatives for children studying in government schools are noteworthy and these include distributing free uniforms, notebooks, bags, geometry boxes, shoes, pencils and other products that would aid them in their studies. Women got four grams of gold and some Rs 50,000 for their marriages. Amma has provided 20 kg of rice every month free of cost.

DMK needs to build trust

The results show that DMK has a lot of work to do if it wants to win the 2021 assembly elections. It needs to improve its image which has been tainted by corruption. Perhaps, this can be considered a reason for AIADMK’s spectacular consecutive victory. Maybe, people have not yet forgotten that land-grabbing cases were registered against senior leaders of the party in 2011.
