Schools in Kochi

In Malayali society, education is the most prized thing of the society. The local people and the Government as well lay emphasis on the education of the children. In lieu with the situation, Government of Kerala are setting up the infrastructure to increase the literary rate of Kochi. Special emphasis is laid on the rural areas. The total number of schools in Kochi under the self governing bodies like panchayats and municipalities is above 12,310. About 61% of primary schools are run by these self governing bodies.

In Kerala, every village has at least five primary schools. The government has also laid emphasis on the education of the girls. As a result of this, recently the percentage of girls (49%) in primary schools has almost equaled the boys (51%). More surprisingly, the percentage of girls enrolling in higher secondary education has well surpassed the boys (58% to 42%).
