Education in Kottayam

Being a part of Kerala, which boasts of 100% literacy rate, Kottayam proves to be a major contributer towards the literacy rate in Kerala, with a literacy rate of 95.82% .
Education in Kottayam dates back to the year when the Malankara Orthodox Church was established, which was the first institution to start English education in the southern part of India. Education in Kottayam got a further boost with the establishment of the C.M.S High School, which was later renamed as the Church Missionary Society College High School. This school was established by Benjamin Bailey, who was a British missionary of the region.

Higher education in Kottayam got a major upward lift with the establishment of the C.M.S College in the year 1817 by the Church Missionary Society. The C.M.S College is the first institute of higher education in Kerala. The Mahatma Gandhi University forms an intricate part of the education in Kottayam. One of the most important universities among the universities in Kottayam, the Mahatma Gandhi University offers numerous graduate and post-graduate courses in the field of science, arts and humanities. Some of the important medical institutions in Kottayam include a medical college, a dental college and a nursing college. The educational system in Kottayam has proved to be a benchmark in the academic field of the country.
