Education in Varanasi

Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh is a prominent place for education, attracting students from all over the world. The standard of education is high in comparison to that in many other cities of India and thus, students graduating from here are in great demand for some of the best jobs in the country.

Secondary Education

The schools in Varanasi are categorised as per the boards they are affiliated to.

Uttar Pradesh Board: Apart from the government schools, viz. Government Inter College for Boys and Government Girls Inter College, most of the private schools are also under the purview of Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad or Uttar Pradesh Board of High School and Intermediate Education. Previously, there were several streams of education (science, arts, commerce, technical education, etc.) at the high school level. However since 2000, the syllabus has been revised and now there are 6 compulsory subjects (Hindi, one other language, social science, science, mathematics and an additional subject like moral or SUPW). The UP board conducts 3 board examinations: Class VII, Class X and Class XII. The syllabus for Class IX and X has been bifurcated, so that now the students have to appear for the Class X boards only for the syllabus of Class X. On successful completion of these exams, students become eligible for college education.

Other Boards: Some of the private schools are also affiliated to the CBSE and ICSE boards. They follow the all India pattern of K-12. On completion of Class X board exams, the students gain admission in Class XI in specific streams (science, arts or commerce), and once they clear the Class XII board exams, they become eligible for college education. The schools under these boards are very few as most of the private schools of repute are also affiliated to the UP board.
