Andaman and Nicobar are a group of islands located at the meeting point of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. These islands are a Union Territory of India and are separated from Thailand and Burma by the Andaman Sea.
Comprising of two groups of islands, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands, this archipelago has a population of 3,79,944 (2011 census) and covers an area of 8,250 km sq.

Port Blair on the Andaman Island is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the capital of Nicobar is Car Nicobar. The Andaman and Nicobar islands comprise of 572 islands, out of which only 38 are inhabited. The major languages spoken on these islands are Bengali, Tamil, Hindi, Telegu and Nicobarese and most of the population here are Hindu, followed by Christians, Muslims and Sikhs.

Administration of Andaman and Nicobar Islands:
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are divided into three districts:
  • North and Middle Andaman
  • South Andaman
  • Nicobar
Each district is divided into sub divisions and taluks. A Lieutenant Governor is the head of administration of the islands and a "Pradesh Council" with representatives of people was created to advise the Lieutenant Governor.

Tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands:
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are known for their pristine white sands and turquoise blue waters and attract many tourists year after year. Some of the popular tourist destinations on the island are; Havelock Island for its beautiful beaches, snorkeling and scuba diving, Neil Island for swimming, Barren Island for being the site of India's only volcano, Long Island for camping and Little Andaman for surfing.

Nicobar District

The Nicobar district is also one of the districts at Andaman and Nicobar Islands and was formed on 1st August 1974. The two major tribes of this district are Shompen and Nicobari. Almost 98% of the people of Nicobar District are Christians who follow the Protestant faith and the rest are Muslims. Teressa, Chowra, Bompoka and Car Nicobar are the commonly used languages there.

A deputy commissioner is the chief of the Nicobar district at Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He is posted at the place of Car Nicobar. The district has three headquarters located at Car Nicobar, Campbell Bay and Camorta. The district is declared an integrated tribal district. It is considered a police district from 1991.

The Nicobar district in Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located towards the south-east of the ocean of Bay of Bengal. It is situated between 10 degree N to 6 degree N latitude and between 94 degree E to 92 degree E longitude. This section of the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a total of 22 small and big islands. Out of these 22 islands, only 12 are inhabited by people.

The Nicobar Islands consists of 2 sub-divisions, which are Nancowry and Car Nicobar. Under Nancowry falls all the islands of the Nicobar district except the Car Nicobar. For convenience of administration, this massive sub-division is further divided into three separate sections. These sections are administered and managed by the assistant commissioners, who are headed by the deputy commissioner.

These assistant commissioners are further helped in their work by the tehsildars, village workers and extension officers. The assistant commissioners of the different sections are also the executive magistrates of the respective regions. The assistant commissioners look after the various departments of supply, transport, development, shipping, law and order and revenue of the respective sections.
