Georgia, which is a transcontinental country, is located at the intersection of Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Georgia is part of the Caucasus region. It is bounded by Russia to the North and Northeast, Turkey to the southwest, the Black Sea to the west, Armenia to the south and Azerbaijan to the southeast. The capital and the largest city of Georgia is Tbilisi.

History

At the beginning of the 4th century, the Georgian people formally accepted Christianity, contributing to the early Georgian states' spiritual and political unity. A unified Georgian kingdom emerged in the Middle Ages and reached its golden age during the reigns of King David IV and Queen Tamara in the 12th and early 13th centuries.

One of the Georgian kingdoms allied itself with the Russian Empire in 1783, which gradually annexed the territory of modern Georgia throughout the 19th century. The Russian Revolution took place in 1917, after which Georgia became an independent republic under German protection. After World War I, Georgia was invaded and annexed by the Soviet Union in 1922 and became one of its constituent republics. An independence movement emerged and grew rapidly in the 1990s, which led to Georgia’s secession from the Soviet Union in April 1991.

Culture

The evolution of Georgian culture took place over thousands of years. It enjoyed a golden age and renaissance of classical literature, philosophy, arts, science, and architecture in the 11th century. The culture of Georgia is influenced by the Roman Empire, classical Greece, the Byzantine Empire, various Iranisan empires and the Soviet Union and Russian Empire.

Language

The most widely spoken Kartvelian language, Georgian, serves as the literary language for speakers of related languages. Mainstream linguistics does not accept the alleged genetic link between Kartvelian languages and other language families in the world. Standard Georgian is based primarily on the Kartli dialect. Over the centuries, it has had a strong influence on other dialects, as a result of which all dialects are mostly mutually intelligible.

Geography

Georgia is a mountainous country located almost entirely in the South Caucasus, with some parts north of the Caucasus Dividing Line in the North Caucasus. Western Georgia was known as Colchis and the eastern highlands as Iberia, historically. The main road through the mountains to Russian territory passes through Sida Kartli and the Loki tunnel between North Ossetia and the Daral Strait. Mount Shikara stands as the highest mountain in Georgia.

West Georgia's landscape ranges from lowland swamp forests, swamps and temperate rainforests to eternal snows and glaciers, while the eastern part of the country even includes a small section of semi-arid plains.
